YES you can! To ease your mind I'd like to share a bit of my experience in DS.
My first DS experience I went a little stir crazy purchasing marketing materials and supplies, thinking it would make me successful pretty much overnight. I knew NOTHING about DS and I didn’t really have any guidance to help direct me to the information I needed to start off on the right track. Right out of the gate I purchased 1k business cards, tissue paper, ribbons, packaging materials etc, so I could deliver the best looking package to my clients. When truly all my clients really wanted was just my smile, my honesty and the best service I could provide them and of course that pretty item inside all that fufu packaging. After about 3 yrs I found my passion wasn’t 100% within the product and I wasn’t recouping my over expenditures so I left with a better sense of what people wanted and how I could deliver that to them.
My 2nd company, again I went a little over board but this time I dug into learning more about social media etc so I could get my name out to more people. I’m a little more frugal with the marketing portion of it. I am now useing Social Media as my main source of advertising. With this company I have an excellent commission rate and I am able to pay myself back from the loss I found myself in with the first company.
I have found my passion in my 3rd. Now that I have done my research and have so much more knowledge of how direct sales work, how social media works, what my clients want and need, etc I am comfortable in saying you really need nothing more than your start-up kit to start growing a successful business. With my 3rd try, I have spent next to nothing compared to the first two DS business in marketing materials. It’s a great feeling of achievement, because I've learned so much and its all beginning to pay off.
With all this being said, You DO NOT need to spend a ton of money in marketing materials, display items, packaging materials, web advertising, etc. Remember the saying work smarter not harder? I’m working smarter these days you can too.
All you need is an outgoing personality, a sincere heart, a passion for your products and the motivation to get you the success you desire. Create your business with that passion! Let your business grow, set aside a % each week/month to save on the marketing materials you feel you need to further your business reach/goals. Social media is free, use it (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.). Picking up the phone and calling friend to share your business is free make the call. Printing a flyer and pinning it up at your local market costs just pennies. Lunch with the ladies?, that’s an opportunity to share! Opportunity is all around us, you just need to teach yourself to know when the time is right. Choose to ignore it, and someone else will take it.
Hopefully this helps a bit with the uncertainty of purchasing marketing supplies and advertising materials for your DS business. "Your success tool is knowledge".
In my opinion "DS is an opportunity in personal growth and success". If you grow/run your business with knowledge, you won’t let yourself get carried away with spending $100.00 in supplies, marketing materials etc to make a few bucks.
